A walk is simple. It takes you wherever you want to go, with whoever you want to be with. You can talk, you can enjoy the scenery, you can explore and find and climb and see and do. Bear hunts, dragon chasing, puddle jumping, tree climbing, nature watching. It is whatever you make it, there is no expectation. It's just a walk.
A favourite family walk of mine was a couple of years ago, to Shearwater. On a whim we hopped in the car, slung E in her carrier and off we went! It was a beautiful day and there was so much to see.
The children had hours of fun running through the long grass, balancing on logs, exploring in the trees. L was certain that there were dragons hiding in the woods!
We found lots of places that were perfect for a dragon hideaway, and broken branches that meant that one must have been there just before us! He raced along the path at top speed with H in hot pursuit, desperate to see one for himself. A & J skipped through the trees ahead of them, pointing out flattened patches of grass and cosy corners where dragons might live, joining in with their game.
The magic in nature was there for us to enjoy, all we had to do was go and look for it. We didn't need computers or games or toys. Just us, and the trees.
And the dragons.

Spontaneous days out are the absolute best sometimes - hope you found some dragons!
ReplyDeleteIt really was one of my most favourite family days out, some great memories!
DeleteGorgeous! I love that a simple walk can make for such a memorable day out.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yes, there's nothing better! It's free, the kids can run on ahead without us constantly calling them back, good exercise - it's the best :)
DeleteNothing like a good dragon hunt

DeleteWe once went hunting bears on a mountain - because we all know that bears live in caves and you find caves on mountains. She was very disappointed that we didn't find one though. I wasn't of course lol.
ReplyDeleteHaha yes, that could have been interesting! Maybe would have ended up being more of a RUN! Haha x
DeleteAbsolutely agree. And on a quiet day in the holidays, that's exactly what we do. Amazing how the wonder of nature never changes over the decades....just the wonder of the latest technology!
