Mama OWL Blog: Believe You Can & You're Halfway There

Believe You Can & You're Halfway There

Tuesday, 6 January 2015

I am probably one of the most unfit people I know. I am generally anti any form of exercise because to be honest I just really like, you know, not exercising...

I'm a lot better than I was, to be fair. I gave up smoking five and a half years ago and I don't drink save for the odd gin or glass of vino here and there - a far cry from the nights out with friends during my late twenties. I walk basically everywhere since I don't drive (can, just don't) and I swim occasionally, too. After H was born in 2005 I was at my heaviest ever, and went on to lose 4.5st with Slimming World, but again didn't really exercise and I wasn't particularly healthy in my habits. I guess it is only really now that I am in my early thirties (*weeps*) that I'm thinking - I really need to make an effort.

I want to be fitter. I want to be healthier. And I'm not going to lie, I want to be slimmer.

Sadly for me, this realisation has coincided with New Year though I actually started investigating my options in November, before joining a local gym/fitness group - called Project 6 Pack - in early December. This group's next session happened to start January 5th, so... I know how it looks. I'm a walking cliché. The new year, new me resolution that won't last and the new trainers I have bought in preparation will end up languishing unused at the bottom of the wardrobe after the second week.

Well that is NOT what I want to happen. I don't need a new me, I just need a better one.

I'm really anxious about joining P6P, I haven't done any exercise since... Ooh, secondary school? (Even then I avoided it where I could) and I worry about making a fool of myself or looking like a big flump and it being just generally quite horrific, but I have faith that the ladies in charge will help get me to where I want to be. I am under no illusion that after five babies I could actually have a six pack but I am willing to work as hard as I can to get results, whatever they may be. I also hope that by signing myself up to something that I physically have to attend, it will help to keep me motivated.

I have downloaded the C25K app and made playlists, and have now arranged my mornings so that after I have dropped the kids at school, I can get my exercise in on the way home. It's not going to be easy and I know I am going to struggle my arse off to break bad old habits, but I am hoping that I will learn to enjoy exercise and that that will keep me going. I hope that seeing progress and feeling the benefits will spur me on.

I'm also aware I need to have better eating habits, not just do the exercise. I've given up fizzy drinks as of a couple of months ago (though I think I had probably three fizzy drinks in total over Christmas), I'm drinking more water, eating better (although to be fair we do eat well anyway) and watching portion sizes, and I am also - sob - limiting chocolate. I'm concerned about the possibility of some intolerance due to ongoing tummy issues, so I am also altering my diet to see if cutting certain things out helps at all. We will see.

I debated not actually sharing any of this with the blog. Just coming back in six weeks with "Hey, look what I've done" or just pretending it never happened if I failed miserably. I need to hold myself accountable and by sharing this here, I have laid myself bare to scrutiny. I have made my plans public, and you all get to see me fail or succeed. I don't know what will happen. But - here it is. So you can either point & laugh if I balls it all up or you can pat me on the back when I succeed.

The main thing for me to remember is, I know I can do it. I just have to get on with it.

I too, want to get fitter, healthier and just generally be able to walk to the shop and back without getting out of breathe lol.

    1. Have you considered one of those Acti-Fry things? You only use a tsp of oil and it air fries them, so you could always swap veggie chips for potato? I'm getting one and planning to chip carrots and turnip etc etc. Thank you xx

  6. Good for you!! Who cares what other people think, you actually want to do something and be healthy, there will be people that won't last through the class but that doesn't matter as it's about what you do. You sound motivated and making the changes, you'll do great :) xx

    1. I know what you mean, it's funny isn't it? I literally would run for a bus, or if someone was chasing me and planned to kill me - for no other reason would I run, but now I'm like... Wow. I actually enjoy this! Crazy stuff :)

    2. I'm sharing on my blog for the same reason! I want to have to admit it to people if I fail, because I know that'll keep me motivated. I'd hate to have to post every week that I've done badly that would suck! Good luck with it! x

  9. Good lick hona nd I agree with you it's not about a "new" me for me either, just getting back to being the me I want to be. I am rubbish about exercise too and really struggle to get motivated to do it - I am concentrating on walking more at the moment - small steps lol! xx #bloggingtojogging

  11. Thanks so much for the link back to my blog lovely! You've clearly got the motivation and I'm sure you'll achieve your goals. With the fizzy drinks, have you tried sparkling water with apple juice in? It's a big thing in Germany and its such a great healthy alternative! Thanks for linking with #BloggingToJogging xx

    1. I swapped fizzy drinks for sparkling mineral water, and have weaned myself off it all completely now. I don't miss them either which is strange considering how completely addicted to them I was! Thank you x
