After H & E's success with last year's Summer Reading Challenge (In Scotland the Challenge runs as Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland), we will be joining in again with this year's theme - Record Breakers. With a six week break ahead of them it is easy for kids to fall out of step with their learning progress, particularly reading, and so the Summer Reading Challenge from The Reading Agency can help to prevent that 'dip' during the holidays.
E has made amazing progress in her reading at school in her first year there and has already reached level 19, and H has made a huge advance in his own reading this year too, so I am very keen to nurture both E and H's love of books and stories during their six weeks off of school to keep up that momentum & keep them on track for September.
The challenge encourages children aged between 4 and 11 to read six books during the Summer, there's a different theme each year & they can read anything they like - fact books, joke books, picture or audio books - as long as they're borrowed from the local library. Each time they finish a book they get stickers & rewards, & there's a certificate for everyone who completes the challenge. H & E loved taking part last year and were so proud of their medals and certificates at the end of the 6 weeks, they did so well.
The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all school children and is designed for all reading abilities. Schools work with local libraries and give out information to encourage children to take part, and most libraries run Summer Reading Challenge linked early years activity for pre-schoolers. Head to your local library during the summer holidays and enroll - it's completely free and anybody can take part, why not check out the Facebook page for all the latest news and further details.
So glad I read this post! I was wondering about reading challenges for kids, I'll look into this! I think my kids would enjoy it! Thanks for sharing. xx

DeleteWhat a fantastic idea! Luckily I've still got a couple more years before the summer holidays affect us. But this seems like a great thing to do. #weekendbloghop
ReplyDeleteIt really is, and it's a great way to get people into libraries too - I know previously I have really under utilised what a fantastic resource!
DeleteThis is great, I can't wait for S to be old enough to join in with the Summer Reading Challenge. She's only 3 this year but we can't wait for next year as we love books! It's a great way to keep kids reading and learning during the holidays!
