There are only a few weeks to go until the big Hallmark holiday... But if you're going solo for whatever reason this Valentine's Day or you just fancy a deviation from the predictably saccharine lovefest you get with the average rom-com, I have compiled a list of 10 alternative movies to watch that will make you laugh and possibly cry, for you to sit back and enjoy on your own or with your 'people', or even with your pet.
Love isn't all about the guy getting the girl and driving off into the sunset for a happily ever after. Love is the little things in life, the friendships you make, the people who stand by you through the hard times, the ones who are there for no other reason than just to be with you when you have nothing to give them but yourself. So celebrate love this Valentine's Day, but in all its forms. In no particular order, here are:
- How to Be Single (2016)
- Thelma and Louise (1991)
- He's Just Not That Into You (2009)
- Boys On The Side (1995)
- The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005)
- Waiting To Exhale (1995)
- Riding In Cars With Boys (2001)
- Now And Then (1995)
- Fried Green Tomatoes (1992)
- Steel Magnolias (1989)
I won't denigrate these movies by referring to them as 'chick flicks' because they are so much more than that. They are stories about friendship, companionship, what it means to share your life with someone in whatever form that comes in. They show that not everything runs smoothly, and that sometimes things don't work out the way you want or how you thought that they might, but that ultimately if you have someone you trust who loves you and is there for you, that it probably will all be ok in the end.
I love He's Just Not That Into You. I have How To Be Single though that I haven't watched yet
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen half of these, but I absolutely loved Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (though, of course, loved the book more than the film). Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a good girl friendship movie!
ReplyDeleteThelma and Louise and Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants have to be up there in my top 10 movies of all time!
ReplyDeleteI loved Steel Magnolias. Always a great film! Some on here that I have yet to discover so thanks for the pointers!
ReplyDeleteI'm ashamed to admit I haven't watched most of these! It'll be my mission to do it by Valentine's Day x
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of alternative Valentine's movies as I am not into chick flicks at all! I'll have to check these out. Great idea for a post.
ReplyDeleteYou're so right about love, I've never been in a relationship but I feel quite complete with the friendships I have already. I heard 'How to be Single' was pretty good though :)
ReplyDeleteA great list of movies. Steel Magnolias is one of my all time favourites, can't beat a good chick flick.
ReplyDeleteThis list is absolutely perfect! Within my flat we're having a singles only night as we're rejecting the one flatmate in a loved-up relationship while that couple go on holiday together to celebrate Valentine's Day, so definitely will be watching a few of the movies you've suggested!
ReplyDeleteI just love Themlma and Lousie! Great choices!
ReplyDeleteI just love Thelma and Louise, and what great choices, I hate the idea of chick flicks how about just great flicks!
