Mama OWL Blog: About Me

About Me

My name is Julie and I am a thirty-something mum from the West Country. I have five gorgeous kids (A, J, L, H & E) and a husband, The Mister, as well as two gorgeous dogs - Florence the Chorkie & Joseph the Miniature Dachshund.

A (1998) has left home and headed off  to start her first year at Uni. Her bedroom looks like the aftermath of an explosion in Urban Outfitters and the Boots cosmetic counter, and she's a huge fan of festivals and music that I generally disapprove of.

J (2001) is currently studying for his GCSEs and making plans for the next stage of his life. He is a budding young Gamer/ slash /Footballer and loves his XBOX One, and Man Utd. Occasionally he leaves his room.

L (2003) is a HUGE computer games enthusiast (PS3/PS4 & Wii are his favourite consoles) and the oracle on all things Skylander, Minecraft, and Pokemon related as well as being a massive fan of Jurassic Park.

H (2005) is a big fan and collector of LEGO, a very keen swimmer & rugby player (Come on you Bath!) and wants to follow in the footsteps of his sporting hero James Haskell, although he is also starting to fancy himself as the next Steve Backshall and loves Deadly 60!

Last but not least we have our princess in training, Miss E (2005) who is an aspiring young gymnast with her heart set on the Olympics and is your stereotypical girly girl and mad on Disney Princess, fairies, barbies, & baby dolls as well as art and crafts and anything creative.

Think you have seen my face before? You might have... In February 2013 L and I were featured in this article in The Guardian newspaper highlighting the issue of illegal exclusions of disabled children from schools.

We lead an average life - school, housework, errands... The Mister works all the hours and when he isn't working he is coaching J's Football team. We grab every opportunity we can to do things together as a family because our time can be limited by the daily grind, and so we want to make every minute count.

Parenting to us isn't a chore, or just an obligation, it's a pleasure. The sun rises and sets on our children and we want to give them the best childhood we can. We don't have wads of cash to spend on the kids, but in our opinion the best thing to spend on kids is time and quite frankly, there is nothing else I would rather do than be in the kitchen up to my elbows in cake mixture, or covered in mud from a bear hunt in the woods. Some days things are great, and some days things are shit. But we roll with the punches and see where the day takes us.

This blog is primarily somewhere for me to share thoughts, ideas, recipes, reviews, activities & pictures of what we spend our time doing, and sometimes as a place to vent my thoughts, feelings & frustrations at the joy and pain of raising a child with Autism (that would be the magnificent L) and the general day-to-day chaos that is our life. So welcome to our world. Think of it like a curly wurly... Sweet, but with a twist. Enjoy!
